Trinity CE Primary School leads the way in sustainability with solar-powered future

Trinity CE Primary School in Aldwincle is marking Earth Day by showcasing its commitment to sustainability, following the installation of a full-roof solar array as part of a wider programme of environmental improvements.

The school, part of the Peterborough Diocese Education Trust (PDET), has recently completed significant site upgrades, including a new roof designed to support renewable energy generation. The solar array now enables the school to produce its own clean energy, reducing both its carbon footprint and energy costs.

Alongside this, the school has invested in advanced heat decarbonisation systems, including Air Source and Water Source Heat Pumps - low-carbon technologies that take heat from the air and water and use it to warm the school - making the site one of the most environmentally sustainable in the Trust and financially efficient, with savings of over to £10,000 over the course of the year.

Lee Hughes, Chief Operating Officer, said: “The steps we have taken to make Trinity a more sustainable and environmentally responsible school are incredibly rewarding.

“This isn’t just an investment in our buildings, but in our pupils’ future. It’s vital that we lead by example and show our children what a commitment to the planet looks like in practice.”

These developments have been forming part of a wider strategic approach to sustainability across the Trust, which is committed to embedding environmental responsibility and global citizenship into both its operations and curriculums.

Ruth Walker-Green, CEO at PDET, added: “Sustainability is a key strategic priority for our Trust. We want every one of our schools to play a role in tackling climate changes, while also educating pupils to be responsible global citizens.

“The work at Trinity is a fantastic example of what can be achieved, and we look forward to building on this success across all our schools.”
