Mears Ashby CE Primary School praised for “big family feel” following Ofsted inspection

Mears Ashby Church of England Primary School has been praised by Ofsted for its nurturing environment, strong early years provision and improving quality of education in their latest inspection.

Inspectors highlighted the strong start children receive in early years, where a well-sequenced curriculum and clear focus on communication and language help the youngest of pupils to develop confidence and independence from the outset.

Across the school, relationships between staff and pupils are consistently positive, creating a warm and nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued and ready to learn. Inspectors noted that pupils are well cared for and described the school as having a “big family feel”, with strong relationships at the heart of daily life.

The inspection, which took place in early February, found the school to be deliveringprovision consistently of a high standard, now called the expected standard of education, across most areas under Ofsted’s new inspection framework. Two areas were identified as “needs attention”, which indicates that while there is good provision in these areas, further work is needed to embed improvements already underway. All safeguarding standards were also met.

Rae Green, Headteacher at Mears Ashby, said: “We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised the strength of our school community that makes Mears Ashby such a special place to learn. Our children are at the heart of everything we do, and it is wonderful to see their happiness reflected in the report.

“Our staff team is dedicated to every pupil, and we are determined to build on this strong foundation so that all our children do well.”

Inspectors highlighted a number of strengths, including:

“Children get off to a great start in the early years.”
In phonics and reading, gaps in pupils' knowledge are identified and addressed promptly.”
“Pupils make good use of the wellresourced outdoor areas, including the peace garden, trim trails and field areas.”
“The school knows its pupils well… and ensures that pupils receive the support they need to thrive.”
“Pupils are happy, safe and eager to work hard.”

Inspectors also recognised the school’s success in preparing pupils for the future, noting that, “Pupils are well prepared for life beyond school.” Pupils also demonstrated mature attitudes, a strong sense of right and wrong, and a clear understanding of respect and equality, equipping them for the next stage of education.

Inspectors also found that the school has been working to improve behaviour and that relationships between staff and pupils are consistently positive. Pupils understand and live out the school’s values.

Mears Ashby Church of England Primary School is part of Peterborough Diocese Education Trust (PDET).

Ruth Walker-Green, CEO at PDET, added: “The inspection team’s positive comments really capture what makes Mears Ashby such a special school. There is a genuine warmth and community that shines through and is felt by all.

“The school community should feel proud; the school has such a strong foundation and clear sense of purpose. I am excited to see it continue to go from strength to strength.”
