Cottingham CofE Primary School Pupils Aim for Gold in Mental Health Programme
Cottingham CofE Primary School is setting its sights on becoming the first school in the North Northamptonshire Council area to achieve the Healthy Schools Gold Award, building on its successful journey through the bronze and silver levels over the past year.
The Healthy Schools scheme is a nationally recognised, self-assessed initiative focused on improving pupils’ mental health and wellbeing. Cottingham achieved the bronze award in February 2024, followed by silver later in the year, and is now working towards reaching gold standard by summer.
While Falconer’s Hill Academy in Daventry was the first in Northamptonshire to secure the gold award, Cottingham could soon become a pioneer for the north of the county.
As part of their efforts, Year Six pupils have been exploring the five key themes of the project: giving, connecting, being active, taking notice and learning. Their activities have included donating supplies to a Corby food bank, organising a family afternoon and taking part in yoga sessions led by school administrator Mrs Southcombe.
One pupil, Reuben, has even taken on his own fundraising challenge, and together with his classmates, helped raise £300 for Cransley Hospice through a school raffle.
Students said the project has helped them feel "more kind", "happier", and "confident"—demonstrating the real impact of the school’s focus on wellbeing.
We can’t wait to see Cottingham achieve this well-deserved Gold Award. The school’s commitment to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing is truly inspiring and this recognition would be a testament to the hard work of both staff and pupils.
